Buying Guides

Research the product before you buy it.

Compare equipment by the criteria that actually matter for your project, environment, budget, and system.

Start with the system, not the shopping cart

Buying Guides are intended to help you research products and compare selection criteria. They are not product endorsements, engineering specifications, or a substitute for determining what a particular project requires.

Product research

Choose equipment based on the job it needs to do.

Start by defining the system requirement, then compare products against that requirement. Price alone rarely tells you whether equipment is a good fit.

Portable Power

Research portable power stations and related equipment by capacity, output, portability, charging options, and the jobs you need them to perform.

Questions to ask

  • What loads need to run, and for how long?
  • Which outputs, charging methods, and operating limits matter?
  • Is portability actually important for this project?

Batteries

Compare battery options by usable capacity, power capability, chemistry, operating conditions, expected service life, and system compatibility.

Questions to ask

  • How much usable energy is actually needed?
  • What continuous and peak power must the battery support?
  • What installation, temperature, maintenance, and warranty factors matter?

Heating & Cooling

Research heating and cooling equipment using climate, building characteristics, comfort goals, energy use, installation constraints, and serviceability as selection criteria.

Questions to ask

  • What comfort and climate conditions should the equipment handle?
  • How does the equipment affect the project's energy plan?
  • What installation, noise, controls, and maintenance constraints matter?

Water & Sanitation

Research tanks, pumps, treatment equipment, toilets, and wastewater components only after the project's water and sanitation approach is understood.

Questions to ask

  • What system problem is the product actually solving?
  • What source, flow, pressure, capacity, or treatment requirements apply?
  • What maintenance, disposal, service, and local requirements need to be confirmed?

What to compare

Depending on the product, useful comparison criteria can include capacity, performance, compatibility, dimensions, installation requirements, operating environment, controls, maintenance, warranty, service availability, replacement parts, energy or fuel use, and total cost of ownership.

The relevant criteria will vary by product. A specification that matters for a battery may be irrelevant for a water tank, while a heating appliance may have installation and regulatory requirements that do not apply to portable equipment.

Affiliate relationships will not replace product research

When affiliate products are eventually included, the goal is to make the commercial relationship clear while keeping the selection criteria useful whether or not a visitor purchases through an affiliate link. Manufacturer specifications and current product information should always be checked before purchase.

Important: Product availability, specifications, pricing, warranties, installation requirements, and local compliance can change. Verify current manufacturer information and project-specific requirements before buying or installing equipment.
